COURSE RATIONALE

This is a basic foundational course that introduces students in the second year to biological chemistry at a molecular level. In general biochemistry, it provides the basics of the structure, function and classification of the biomolecules of living organisms. While in metabolic biochemistry the students are introduced to the knowledge of the synthesis and metabolism of these biomolecules. Furthermore, metabolic biochemistry focuses on biochemical pathways involved in intermediary metabolism, and look at the DNA and RNA replications including translation. Students are also trained in a variety of basic biochemistry-based laboratory skills. Knowledge of biochemistry is essential for better understanding of pharmacology, pathology and pharmaceutical chemistry. The course aims to enable the students, have a general understanding of the structure, function, classification and metabolism of biomolecules and conduct basic biochemical techniques.
